A spool is basically a chunk of steel or aluminum that replaces the differential so that both the left and right wheels are permanently locked together. In the 1950s, Hot Rod enthusiasts commonly welded together the spider gears inside their differential so that they could spin both wheels off the line and gain ultimate traction. (A differential that has been welded together is called a Lincoln Locker)
Today spools are commonly available in two basic styles, a full spool and mini spool. The full spool replaces the complete differential unit, while the mini spool simply fits inside the differential case and replaces the side and spider gears.
